Sortrace attracts investment for cameras that reveal recycling mistakes

Putting a bottle in the wrong bin is easy; finding where sorting goes wrong across a city is harder. Sortrace, a Stockholm company analyzing household waste, has attracted investment from Gorilla Capital, a startup investment firm. The company says its system uses cameras on collection trucks to photograph waste as each bin is emptied, then turns the images into records of sorting mistakes.

According to its investor, images are anonymized on the truck and stored in the European Union. Sortrace already works with several municipalities and plans to add installations and expand beyond collection vehicles. The point is not simply to count waste: cities could see whether their efforts to improve sorting actually change what ends up in the bins.
